Chapter Twelve
The mirror reflected a woman who didn’t feel nearly as confident in the dress she wore as she looked. I smoothed the garment across my hips and checked the mirror to make sure the button didn’t make the dress stick out in one obvious spot. I was good at camouflage, but then again, I hadn’t been on a date in years.
I walked to Mabel’s dresser and opened the top drawer, something I hadn’t been able to do since she passed. The room was empty except for her ostentatious cherry wood dresser. It was about thirty years out of date, but so large it was hard to part with it simply for the extra storage space it provided for sheets, towels, and blankets. My dad had cleaned out all her clothes, but there was a box in the top drawer which simply had ‘Cinn’ written on it. I’ve known it was in there since I moved in, but have yet to pick it up and open it. Seeing my name in her scrawling cursive brought a lump to my throat, and I hadn’t a clue what was inside, neither did my father. When he left, I put it back in the drawer, but I’ve thought about it every day since then.
For some reason, I felt like tonight was a good night to open it. Maybe I was trying to put off finishing getting ready for my date. I wandered back into my bedroom and sank down on the bed, the box on my lap as I thought about the promises tonight may hold. Foster and I had gone back after Mike left and roped off the dog park on Saturday evening. When we arrived back at his apartment, there were two more calls from vets in the surrounding counties with sick dogs. They had all been in Little Ivywood for the carnival, and returned home ill, but thankfully none had died like poor Bear. A detective from the police station contacted us immediately and asked us to keep the camera installation to ourselves. So, rather than ask for the money from Mabel’s estate, Foster took the money from her donation to the shelter with a promise from me to reimburse him once the person responsible for this sat in jail awaiting trial.
Tonight, after we had a normal dinner at a normal restaurant, we planned to do something not at all normal. We were going to install the cameras under the cover of darkness. Then we would turn them on and open the dog park again. We planned to have it manned during the day to make sure the animals were safe, but at night when no one was around, we hoped to catch whomever was trying to poison our pets.
That was Saturday, and this is Tuesday, and I had to finish getting ready before he arrived to pick me up. I asked him to bring Poopsie over here, and we would leave the two dogs alone in the house. They
